New Deviant ID and My Autobiography

Fri Jul 10, 2009, 6:01 PM
Hey guys, Wow yay shiny new Dev ID :D
The idea behind it was for the outline / shape to be like embossed into the page and i think the simplicity works well.
Yay summer break, Woo!
I will start compiling my Art Portfolio for my university application over the summer, exciting times. I am also hoping to do lots of animation and 3d work too so hopefully you guys will get to see some of that.

Here is an exert i have been working on, its sort of my autobiography, i got to thinking about it whilst writing my personal statement:

"I have had a keen interest in animation since I was about 12, my mum got a demo of koolmoves free in a PC magazine. Koolmoves is an entry level animation software which was really terrible compared to flash but I found it a lot of fun at the time, making my own comedy sketch animations and sending them to my friends to watch, there wasn’t any sound, the characters were stickmen and things barely went to plan but the crudeness of the drawings was all part of the fun.

Then I started using macromedia flash and joined the new grounds community, a website which host’s animators work and I was inspired by the quality of animation out there made by amateurs my age, so I taught myself flash and started work on my first flash project with voice acting by my friends and better quality drawings. I spent a lot of time playing around in flash over the next couples years or so, I had a massive writers block because i was actually put off by the quality created by other animators, i felt like whatever i made wasn't as good quality as i had seen and i beat myself up about it, so i didn't progress here, i was also struggling to find a style which i was comfortable with, constantly changing my drawing styles and unable to start any projects even though i had a few good scripts and storyboards in the back works.
One day I signed up to Deviant art and stumbled upon a competition for a flash website called whirled, this inspired me once again and I created some really high quality animated avatars, furniture and rooms for my personal virtual world. The feedback I received was really encouraging and so I pursued this further and made some really good friends on the site. What I enjoyed most about Whirled is that I could use my already developed talents with flash to create content I wanted to and I didn’t get bogged down by creating a really long movie with high quality drawings.

The first time I wanted to become an animator for games was when I was playing world of Warcraft and I kept thinking up cool new attack animations that my character could do, it really excited me and I started acting them out in lounge, then I started looking into entry level 3D software and found blender, there is a huge catalog of free tutorials on the wikipedia website, it was great and i learnt a lot but then after i got used to it i realised that the games industry would want me to use 3DS Max or Maya, i have had a little play in 3DS Max but i really hated the user interface and the new controls and i felt much more comfortable in Blender, so that was a dead end, however it wasn't a wasted experience, i learnt some basics and modeling techniques in 3D and i learnt that i would really enjoy that career path if i followed it.
I was also interested in the modding side of games, my favorite creative outlet at the time was Warcraft III’s world editor, and I got really enthusiastic about creating my own maps and then creating my own content for the game, such as models but I was a victim of the times because by the time I was mature enough to really start modeling in 3d properly the version of 3dsmax that had been used to create the models by blizzard was so out of date now that I couldn’t get hold of it anywhere, not even torrent sites, so I gave up on that for a while, I am now biding my time until Starcraft 2 comes out to use it's world editor and it uses the newest version of 3D software, hoping it would come out in time for me to play around with it in the summer but unluckily it is coming out in September at the end of summer so i may have to find a new channel, I'm thinking probably fallout 3 as it had a large modding community, the only reason I'm hesitant is that fallout 3 has higher poly models than the warcraft and starcraft series' and this is just because of the nature of their genre, so it will be harder for a beginner to jump straight into high poly modeling and the more advanced 3D techniques used in Fallout 3."

That's it for now. Enjoy!
